In 1987 Bernie purchased the Hickey-Kent Funeral Home in Whitewater. His eldest son, James joined the family business and the name at both locations was changed to Olsen Funeral Home. Fuchs started a furniture store and an undertaking business which he operated until his death in 1912, when his son, Adam G. Fuchs, took over. The Olsen-Gibson Funeral Home embodies the hard work and continuity that has made Jefferson County the thriving area it is today. We are proud of our history and would like to share it with you.
When Nowatka learned that Olsen was ready to retire and was looking for a worthy successor, Nowatka said he thought he knew the right person for the job. Olsen noted that his father attended school there in the 1950s and he followed in his father’s footsteps. Pretty soon, Gibson was lending a hand regularly, and Nowatka asked whether Gibson had ever thought of going into funeral directing as a career. “I found out what I didn’t want to do with my life,” he said with a smile.

Gibson said he looks to become involved in community organizations and improvement efforts and is excited about prospects for riverfront revitalization. Even though word of the business transfer has only just gotten out, Gibson said, the Jefferson community already has been really welcoming. “My office will be done next week and we hope to have an open house for the community within a month,” Gibson said.

Geryl was born on September 25, 1957, in Brookfield, WI, the son of Herman and Shirley Rossbach. Jack was born in Harvard, Illinois, the son of the late John and Florence Gies. We are a family-owned and operated funeral home in our third generation of Olson ownership. Bob worked as a produce grocer at the Kroger Grocery Store of Janesville.
